TRIPLE 'A' FLYING

COMMERCIAL PILOT LICENCE (AEROPLANE)
CPL (A) MODULAR FLIGHT TRAINING COURSE

REF APPENDIX 1 TO JAA-FCL 1.160 AND 1.165 (a) 1.

THE AIM OF THE COURSE

The aim of the CPL (A) Modular Course is to train PPL (A) holders to the level of proficiency necessary to act as pilot in command or co-pilot of any aeroplane engaged in operations other than commercial air transportation, act as pilot in command in commercial air transportation of any single pilot aeroplane, and act as co-pilot in commercial transportation.

DURATION OF THE COURSE

Assuming a full time attendance (five days a week), by students at Triple 'A' Flying, the expected duration of the full course, barring delays due to weather etc, is expected to average 4 weeks and 3 weeks if the Instrument Flying element is not required

PRE-ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Before commencing a CPL (A) Modular Course an applicant shall:

  1. Be the holder of a PPL (A) issued in accordance with ICAO Annex 1

  2. Have completed 150 hours flight time as a pilot and;

  3. Have complied with JAA-FCL 1.225 and 1.240 if a multi engine aeroplane is to be used on the skill test.

An applicant wishing to undertake a CPL (A) Modular Course shall, under the supervision of the Head of Training of an Approved Flying Training Organisation (FTO), complete all the instructional stages in one continuous approved course of training as arranged by that FTO. The theoretical knowledge instruction may be given at an organisation approved to conduct courses of theoretical instruction, as set out in Appendix 1 to JAA-FCL 1.055 relevant to specialised theoretical knowledge instruction only, in which case the Head of Training of that organisation shall supervise that part of the course.

Triple 'A' Flying does not undertake the theoretical knowledge training.

The flight instruction and Skill Test shall be completed within the period of validity of the pass in the theoretical examinations, as set out in JAA-FCL 1.495, which is 36 months from the date of gaining the last Pass or Partial Pass in the required examinations

CPL (A) FLIGHT INSTRUCTION COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Applicants without an instrument rating shall be given at least 25 hours dual flight instruction (see AMC FCL 1.160 & 1.165 (a)(4), including 10 hours of instrument instruction of which up to 5 hours may be instrument ground time in a FNPT I or II or a flight simulator (see AMC FCL 1.160 (a)).

Applicants with a valid instrument rating shall be given at least 15 hours dual visual flight instruction.

Applicants without a night flying qualification shall be given the 5hours night flight instruction.

At least five hours of the flight instruction shall be carried out in an aeroplane certificated for the carriage of at least four persons and have a variable pitch propeller and retractable landing gear.

The holder of a current ICAO CPL (A) is exempt from any minimum hours Course requirement and only needs to complete sufficient training in order to meet the Skill Test standards.

By and large it is the intention to follow the order of the lessons of the syllabus, to enable  the student to be better able in a logical and efficient way, to acquire the required skills and generally make progress towards the ultimate goal of obtaining the CPL (A). However the Head of Training shall retain the right to vary this approach due to such factors as individual student aptitude, technical matters and weather etc.

NB:

  1. Holders of a valid issued instrument rating are exempt the instrument flying instruction.

  2. Five hours of the instrument flying may be undertaken on the Frasca 142 FNPT ( Simulator).

  3. Differences training is carried out if required, e.g. if MEP Class Rating is already held but not on the same type of aircraft that will be used on the Skill Test.

  4. The CAA have announced that the 5 hours training on a complex (multi) aircraft as part of the CPL (A) Course, may also count towards the flying training for the MEP (Land) Class Rating which can be completed by undertaking an additional 3 hours flying for a total of 8 hours. The Skill Test for the CPL (A) and the MEP (Land) Class Rating would then be incorporated within the same flight i.e. Course total hours would then be 28 hours.

CPL (A) SKILL TEST

Authorisation to undertake the CPL (A) Skill Test will only be given upon the basis that the Head of Training is satisfied that the Candidate has completed the course syllabus, the Course End Certificate has been signed off, and has reached the test standard and a form FCL 170A will then be completed to that effect.

The applicant shall take the CPL (A) skill test on either a multi-engine or a single engine aeroplane in accordance with Appendix 1 and JAA-FCL 1.170

Notes for the guidance of candidates taking the CPL (A) Skill Test are available. Strictly these notes are for the GFT for the UK Professional Pilots License (Aeroplanes) but in the absence of an equivalent JAA document it nevertheless is still of practical use.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ISSUE OF CPL (A)

Experience Ref; JAA-FCL 1.155

An applicant for a CPL (A) who is not a graduate from an integrated flying training course shall have completed as a pilot on aeroplanes having a certificate of airworthiness issued or accepted by a JAA Member State, at least 200 hours of flight time.

Crediting from the 200 hours of flight time:

  1. 10 hours may be instrument ground time and

  2. 30 hours as pilot in command holding a PPL (H) or

  3. 100 hours as pilot in command holding a CPL (H) of the 200 hours may have been completed in helicopters;
    or

  4. 30 hours as pilot in command in touring motor gliders or gliders

Flight Time. The applicant shall have completed in aeroplanes during the modular course's 200 hours of flight time including at least:

  1. 100 hours as pilot in command, or 70 hours as pilot in command if completed during a course of integrated flying training as set out in Appendix 1 to JAA-FCL 1.160 & 1.165 (a) (1) through (3) and AMC FCL 1.160 & 1.165 (a) (1), (2) and (3)

  2. 20 hours of cross country flight time as pilot in command, including a cross country flight totaling at least 540km (300NM) in the course of which full stop landings at two aerodromes different from the aerodromes of departure shall be made.

  3. 10 hours of instrument instruction time, of which not more than 5 hours is to be instrument ground time;
    and

  4. 5 hours of night flight time, as set out in JAA-FCL 1.65(b) Simulated Flight Time. The authority will determine whether experience as a pilot under instruction in an FNPT or in a flight simulator is acceptable as part of the total flight time required (see Appendix 1 JAA-FCL 1.160 & 1.165(a)(1) through (4).

    The successful completion of the appropriate theoretical knowledge examinations at CPL (A) or ATPL (A) level and the Skill Test fulfill the knowledge and skill requirements for the issue of the CPL (A).

MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
An applicant for and a holder of a CPL (A) shall hold a valid Class 1 Medical Certificate.
