TRIPLE 'A' FLYING

INSTRUMENT RATING (AEROPLANE) IR (A) MODULA
R
SYNTHETIC AND FLIGHT TRAINING COURSE

REF: JAA FCL 1.135 & JAA FCL 1.205

THE AIM OF THE COURSE

To train applicants holding a CPL (A) or PPL (A) with a night qualification to operate a single pilot aeroplane (SPA) under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) in light /moderate icing conditions to Public Transport Minima.

DURATION OF THE COURSE

Civilian Pilot

Assuming a full time attendance (five days a week) by students at Triple 'A' Flying, the expected duration of the full course, barring delays due to weather etc, is expected to average 7 weeks for the 50 hour or 55 hour Course.

An ICAO IR(A) Holder requiring the 15 hour JAA Abridged Course should allow around 3-4 weeks on a similar basis of attendance..

Qualified Service Pilot (QSP)

Military Pilots have particular requirements, not least the need to usually have completed the training and the test within an annual leave period - usually two to three weeks which is realistically achievable on average.  We are also part of the Enhanced Learning Credits Scheme, (Registration No. 1835), (For more details see under “Flight Training with Triple “A” Flying”)

To date, virtually all military pilots attending Triple 'A' Flying have achieved a full first time pass.

PRE-ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

An applicant for a Modular IR (A) course shall be the holder of a PPL (A) or a CPL (A), either licence to include a night qualification, issued in accordance with ICAO Annex 1

An applicant wishing to undertake a Modular IR (A) course shall be required, under the supervision of the Head of Training of an approved flying training organisation (FTO), to complete all the instructional stages in one continuous approved course of training as arranged by that FTO. The theoretical knowledge instruction may be given at an organisation specialising in theoretical knowledge instruction, as set out in Appendix 1 to JAA-FCL 1.055 relevant to specialised theoretical knowledge instruction only, in which case the Head of Training of that organisation shall supervise that part of the course.

Triple 'A' Flying does not undertake the theoretical knowledge training

The Course of theoretical instruction which can be at JAA CPL (A) or ATPL (A) or IR (A) level shall be completed within 18 months. The flight instruction and skill test rating shall be completed within a period of 36 months from the date of gaining the last pass in the required examinations - see JAA-FCL 1.495.

Before commencing a JAA Multi Engine IR(A) Course the applicant must hold, or be capable of being issued with, a  JAA Multi Engine Piston (Land Single Pilot Aeroplane) Class Rating. An ICAO Multi Rating will permit the holder to commence the IR(A) Course. If no Multi Rating is held then a totally separate 6 hour JAA Multi Engine Piston Course will have to be undertaken – refer to MEP Course Section on this Website for further details.

There is no laid down minimum number of flying hours required to commence any IR (A) Course however, there are certain minimum hours specified in certain areas for IR (A) issue the details of which are itemised under, REQUIREMENTS FOR  IR (A) ISSUE on Page 4.

The holder of a JAA PPL (A) or UK National Licence at PPL (A) level may undertake the JAA IR (A) Synthetic and Flight Instruction Course having undertaken the JAA PPL/IR Ground Examinations.

IR (A) SYNTHETIC AND FLIGHT INSTRUCTION COURSE REQUIREMENTS

REF; JAA -FCL 1.205 APPENDIX 1

The Exercises up to the IR (A) Skill Test shall comprise:

a.        Pre-flight procedures for IFR flights, including the use of the flight manual and appropriate air traffic services documents in the preparation of an IFR flight plan.

b.        Procedures and manoeuvres for IFR operation under normal, abnormal and emergency conditions covering at least:

    -       transition from visual to instrument flight take off
    -       standard instrument departures and arrivals
    -       en-route IFR procedures
    -       holding procedures
    -       instrument approaches to specified minima
    -       missed approach procedures
    -       landings from instrument approaches, including circling

c.        In flight manoeuvres and particular flight characteristics

d.        If required, operation of a multi engine aeroplane in the above exercises, including operation of the aeroplane solely by reference to instruments with one engine simulated inoperative and engine shut down and restart (the latter exercise to be carried out at a safe altitude unless carried out in a flight simulator or FNPT 2).

e.        The syllabi lesson by lesson are given on page 3

A single engine IR (A) course shall comprise at least 50 hours instrument time under instruction of which
up to 25 hours may be instrument ground time in a FNPT (I) or up to 35 hours in a flight simulator or FNPT (II), if agreed by the Authority

A multi engine IR (A) course shall comprise at least 55 hours instrument time under instruction
of wh
ich up to 25 hours is in a FNPT (I) STD, or up to 40 hours in a flight simulator or FNPT (II), if agreed by the Authority. The remaining instrument flight instruction shall include at least 15hours in multi engine aeroplanes

The holder
s of an ICAO CPL (A) or ATPL (A) or applicants who have completed a JAA CPL (A) Course but have yet to apply for licence issue, are
entitled to a 5-hour reduction to 50 hrs for the JAA IR(A) Course, (but excluding the 15 hour Conversion Course) provided there is no overlap between the CPL (A) and IR (A) Courses.

The holder of a single engine IR (A) who also holds a multi engine type or class rating wishing to obtain a multi engine IR (A), shall satisfactorily complete a course comprising at least five hours instruction in instrument flying in a multi engine aeroplane

The holder of an IR (Helicopters) may have the flight instruction reduced to 10 hours on single engine or multi engine as applicable

The JAA Courses above do cater for, within the Course minimum hours, the inclusion of the F.170A Test which is a requirement of the UK CAA and is a pre-IR Test conducted by the school.

The holder of an ICAO Single Crew IR (A)  or a QSP (A) who has not held a Procedural Green Aeroplane IR within the last 5 years preceding the date of application for IR (A) will only have to complete a Course of 15 hours provided it covers all the Syllabus.  However, 5 hours of the 15 hours may be done on a FNPT (I) STD.  10 hours of the 15 hours may be done on a FNPT (11) STD, or a flight simulator if agreed by the Authority.  The reduced Course hours can include the F170A Pre-Test but not the actual JAA IR Skill Test itself.

A QSP (A) who has held a Procedural Green Aeroplane IR within the 5 years preceding the date of application for the IR (A) will only have to do sufficient training at the direction of the Head of Training of an approved FTO in order to meet the Skill Test standard.
