TRIPLE 'A' FLYING

MULTI ENGINE PISTON (LAND - SINGLE PILOT AEROPLANE)
MEP (A) CLASS RATING FLIGHT TRAINING COURSE

REF: JAA-FCL 1.240

THE AIM OF THE COURSE

To give the candidate a sound theoretical knowledge of multi-engined aircraft operation and the skills necessary for the safe and competent operation of such aircraft.

DURATION OF THE COURSE

Assuming a full time attendance (five days a week) by students at Triple 'A' Flying the expected duration of the full course, barring delays due to weather etc, is expected to be 1 week.

PRE - ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

There are no specific pre-entry requirements although regard should be had to the fact that the Class Rating cannot be issued unless the applicant has completed at least 70 hours as pilot in command.

COURSE STRUCTURE Ref: JAA - FCL 1.261 and CAP 601

The Course will comprise 7 hours of Ground Training and 6 hours of Flight Training.  The Flight Training must include 3.5 hours of asymmetric flight techniques / engine failure procedures. The Ground and Flight Training must be integrated and co-ordinated to maximise the benefit derived by the candidate from the time spent in the air.

NB.   If a Night Rating is held prior to the commencement of the MEP (A) Course, then some mandatory limited training at night will have to be undertaken as part of the Course

The UK CAA have indicated that a student who wishes to take the CPL (A) Skill Test on a MEP (Land-SPA) but who does not hold the appropriate Class Rating at the start of the CPL (A) Course will, by completing 8 hours minimum on a Multi Engine Aircraft and 20 hours minimum on a Single Engine Aircraft during the Course as a whole, be deemed to have completed the MEP Class Rating Course providing all other requirements, including the formal ground school and written examinations, have been met prior to taking the combined CPL (A)  and Class Rating Skill Test.

Authorisation to undertake the MEP Land (A) Skill Test will only be given when the written examination has been taken and passed and on a satisfactory completion of the Course Syllabus and the Course End Certificate signed off.

The examiner undertaking the Skill Test must not have instructed the candidate at any time during the Course in respect of either the required ground school or the flight training.

In addition to the Skill Test there is also a requirement to undertake and pass a Written Examination comprising two separate Sections, 1 and 2. The candidate is expected to complete the written examination papers within a period of 1hour and 20minutes but there is no absolute time limit specified

a)  Section 1
The candidate must answer the questions in this section without access to the Aircraft Manual and / or Aircraft Performance Data specific to the actual type of aircraft used on the Course.

b)  Section 2
The candidate in order to answer the questions in this section will require access to the Aircraft Manual and / or Aircraft Performance Data specific to the actual aircraft used on the Course.
